Our policy is to organise the best cover at the best rates. We ensure this by being totally independent and by working with the countries leading underwriters and insurance companies compiling unique products.

You want cheaper insurance on your vehicle, we all so desperately want cheaper insurance. Why pay for more than what you should?

We have compiled a comprehensive guide to prevent you from being ripped off by your insurer.

How to save on your insurance today

Arrange the insurance yourself: Make sure that your vehicle has been correctly insured, do not rely on any third party to insure your vehicle for you. Third parties includes people like your vehicle's salesperson. The salesperson may, or may not, get commission on the insurance policy, but irrespective of this, their job is to sell you the car, and not to find the best insurance for your circumstances. If your vehicle has been insured by a third party, call up the insurer and confirm the details again.

Direct: If you do decide to go direct, be honest with the call centre, do not try to add one or two “small changes” to the information they require, if something is to happen to your vehicle, you will not be paid out. All conversations are recorded.

Best value: Get a few quotes from different companies, three should be sufficient to get a guide on pricing. If one of the quotes is too high or too low, then enquire why, don’t just jump for the lowest quote. Pick the insurance that offers the best value for you, not the lowest price.

Pay annually: Most insurers give discounts on annual premiums, consider this option if you have the finances to do so.

Increase your excess: Consider increasing your excess if you travel less frequently, or if you can afford the excess - the rule is that you should be able to pay this excess from your savings if something were to happen to your vehicle on the same day your vehicle gets insured.

Remove certain cover: Consider removing radio cover as it is not that expensive to replace, so why pay for it? Trailers, caravans, accessories can also be excluded.

Drive less: Most insurance companies consider driving distance in their premium calculations. Drive less by using alternatives.

Low risk car: Consider a low risk vehicle. If you drive a high risk vehicle such as a sport vehicle, you naturally can afford a higher excess, consider increasing your excess payment to offset the higher insurance costs.

Security device discounts: Ask about security device discounts, some insurance companies will fit tracking devices at no charge for you. Gear locks, steering locks, anti-hijack devices and car alarms will benefit your premiums. Balance the price you pay to the savings you make over a period of time, it may be worth your while to invest in a number of these devices.

Younger drivers: Young drivers will benefit from being under their parents insurance (if the parents have a good driving record at least), however, your premiums will be inflated if they are involved in an accident. Consider the option of insuring your children separately.

AA members, female drives and age does have an impact on insurance premiums. Ask about discounts.

Currently insured: If you are already insured, you should mention your existing premium, and that you are looking for alternative companies so that you may lower those premiums. You can always discuss this option with your existing insurer first.

Business users should always mention that they are using their vehicles for business irrespective of wherever the vehicle is registered under the company name, or their personal name. Business insurance premiums are always higher than personal insurance premiums, but it is also higher risk.

Lastly, consider insuring your household content under the same policy. You may find that the value of a higher insurance - that includes household content - far outweighs any cheaper insurance.

Stop getting ripped off - things you should know about your insurer

Insurance companies have their group of legal advisors, these advisors have two jobs:

  1. To stop the user getting paid out when they have lied on their application - not your favourite person if you decided to leave out a small detail when you applied, accidentally or intentionally.
  2. To pay the client when an accident happens and they are entitled to get paid - your best friend when the insurance company has tried to block the payout, but the legal advisor intervened.

Underinsured

An excuse an insurance company uses to pay less than what you deserve. If you are underinsured, the insurance company will pay a percentage of the money you are entitled to. For example, if your premium is suppose to be R250 a month, but you are underinsured at R200, the insurance company will only pay out 200/250 or 80% of your claim - minus your excess! Be aware of this.

Over insured

Unfortunately, insurance companies do not have the same policy if you overpaid. If your insurance is suppose to be R250 per month, and you have been paying R275 each month, you will still only get your vehicle's "value" out of the insurer - minus the excess!

Personal goods - the insurance scam!

Unlike vehicles where a certain vehicle manufacturer have set pricing on legitimate parts, personal assets, especially electronic goods such as computers do not seem to have a set value at insurer. Insurance companies always seem to pay out much less than what they are worth, sometimes up to 50% less.

There is an unfortunate, and unethical scheme that insurance companies use to evaluate products.

They use their "independent" assessors to evaluate products, and then these assessors quote the insurance company on inferior product parts (usually no-name brands, or re-branded no-name products), and they also use lower specifications of that product. We have seen this many times with electronic goods, where top quality products are evaluated as inferior products - quite shocking but it happens all the time!

The way you can try to protect yourself is to specify the exact brand names, model names and if you can, indicate the price on your insurance forms - keep your receipts as proof of purchase price. Fight for a fair payout when your belongings do get stolen and don't let them get away with it, after all, you are paying their full premiums.

The insurance company ripped me off!

The stories are numerous - both ways, but you do not want to be on the end of the wrong one.

"Dealing with the insurance company has been the most traumatic part of having had someone drive into me" - T

  • Well said, make sure your insurer is reliable and reputable.
  • Do not go for cheap only - go for a contract that stipulates all the details exactly as you expect them to be.
  • Read through your contract carefully, and change any incorrect information immediately, do not allow your insurer to have any excuse to refuse your claim.
  • You may reject the contract altogether within a specific period - if nothing has been changed, cancel the policy immediately and get your refund, and try insure your vehicle again. This time, use the wrong contract as a guide. Don't let your insurer rip you off.

Who is to blame in case of an accident?

There are many scenarios here, but as a rule of thumb, the person who drove into the other vehicle is usually to blame, as obvious as it may sound, but it is not always clear cut.

Imagine bumping into someone else car's rear end, you are the guilty party as the car could only have been moving forward at the time. But did you know that even if the other party reversed into your vehicles front end, the insurer will take you as the guilty party. This is a good reason for you to keep your distance at those traffic lights, as it happens more often than what you may think.

If the other party is honest enough, then you should not have a problem, but even the most honest of people will lie when they discover how their premiums will get affected, so do not rely on honesty to save you.

Go to the police station together if you can, you do not need to go to your own area's police station, you can go to any police station to give your statement. At least this way, you know how the story will end up.

Digital camera on your cell phone phone? Use it. Take pictures, print them out and use them to defend yourself. Take pictures of the vehicles as well as the surrounding area, such as distances between traffic lights, white lines, yellow lines, or any details that may help your case, after all, if it was not your fault, the last thing you want is to have your premiums hiked.

A bad repair job

If your insurance company insisted that you use a specific panel beater, then take the issue up with the insurer. Do not blame the other accident party for the bad repair, the repair of your vehicle is between the insurer and the panel beater, and they are the ones responsible for the correct repair of your vehicle.

If however you decided to use your own panel beater, the insurer will pay out a cash value to pay the panel beater. The responsibility will therefore fall on you to have a bad repair job redone.

Lastly, keep cool and drive safely, every bad driver eventually get their day!
